FAQs

Answers to some of our frequently asked questions.

Q. What are the logins for your resources and databases?

A. Due to the fact that we pay for many of the resources we are unable to publicly post the login information. A brochure will be sent home with students to have at home. If you cannot find it, please email the librarian and we are happy to send a new one. We are also able to send the information through seesaw as well.

Q. Where do I find my child's Pleasant Valley school ID number to log in to OverDrive?

A. Your child's PV school ID can be found on his/her report cards.

Q. When is my child's book(s) due back?

A.  Your child's book(s) is always due back the next time they have library class. If they do not return their book, they will not be able to check out a new one.

Q. What happens if my child loses a book or if the book gets damaged?

A.  If a book gets lost or damaged we will send a bill home for the amount due.  This will be what we paid for the book so we can replace it.  If the book was older, we take that into consideration and bill accordingly. Cash or check payments are accepted. Students will not be able to check out a book until the bill is paid.

Q. Do you take donations?

A.  We accept donations of new or gently used books that are intended for students ages 5-8. We do not accept donations of books that are damaged or for older grade levels. We also accept donations of gently used items for our STREAM centers such as legos, building blocks, magnets, games, etc.

Q. How can I volunteer in the library?

A. There is usually a questionnaire that goes out from the school asking if you are interested in volunteering. You can choose the library and we will be forwarded your contact information. You can also reach out to Mrs. Bustos at pvelibrary@pvbears.org. We do only choose a handful each year and look for parents who are able to commit to coming in weekly (even if it's one day) as we do have to train volunteers on reshelving and/or checking out.

Q. Is there a way to see if you have a book in the library that my child wants?

A. Absolutely! You can access our online catalog (Destiny) here and then click on "Pleasant Valley Elementary School" and lastly click on magnifying glass in the upper right corner to search for a book. Then just type in whatever you are interested in! If you have trouble please email the librarian so she can assist you.

Q. Can my child access the library's resources from home?

A. Yes! :)  You can go to our databases and resource here.  Any login or password information can be found on a brochure that is sent home with your child at the beginning of the year. If you cannot find the brochure please email your librarian and one can be sent electronically or mailed to you.

Q. Why didn't my child bring home a book from library class today?

A. If your child didn't bring home a book it is most likely because they forgot to return their book(s) or they brought it back damaged.  In either case there would have been a paper sent home with them.  Please ask them for it and it will explain the reasoning. We ask that you kindly reinforce the importance of taking care of their library book at home. Our number one reason for damaged books for the past few years is water bottles leaking in their backpack. If your child brings a water bottle to school, please put it on the outside pocket of their backpack of there is one.

Q. How many books is my child allowed to take out at once?

A. Kindergarten and 1st grade = 1 book

2nd grade = 2 books

Q. Do you place restrictions on which books a student can take out?

A.  We don't place restriction on the type of book a student can take out.

Kindergartners are allowed to choose from the kindergarten section which                includes fiction and nonfiction.

First grade is allowed to choose from everybody fiction (picture books).  If                  they are able to read it, we also let them check out chapter books,                            although this usually happens more towards the end of the school year for              most students. We do have our beginner chapter books labeled with a green

dot so student can easily identify them. We also allow them to check out

nonfiction as well, although this will begin a month into the school year as we

slowly introduce the new sections to them.

Second grade is allowed to check out anything in the library.

*We do not place any restrictions on the content of the book students choose. For example, a student may choose a ghost book, dinosaur book, holiday book, etc.  If your child brings home a book on a topic you do not want them to read please email the librarian and we will make a note on your child's account to ensure they do not check it out in the future.

**We do ask students to self monitor with the 5 finger rule for chapter books.  What this means is that a student turns to a page and reads it.  Every time they get to a word they don't know they hold up a finger. If by the end of the page, they have 4 or 5 fingers up, the book may be too hard for them to finish before they have to return it next library class.

Q. Can my child renew a book?

A. Your child may renew a book one time unless there is a hold on the book and another student is waiting for it. Due to their popularity we usually do not renew new books (will have a new sticker on the spine) or graphic novels.
